January Fandom Bingo Card
Two and a half days and it has finally stopped snowing and I don't have to keep shoveling the driveway and walkway. Yay!
I actually had this bingo done with a day to spare, which was a little surprising since two of the stories I originally picked turned out to be basically WIPs marked as complete. Well, one was technically complete but it was clearly supposed to be the first part of a series that never got written. Anyway, I read a second story for one of them, though I knew going into it that was an abandoned WIP. That one at least stopped at a point that didn't leave me with 101 unanswered questions. I also ended up reading two series for two fandoms instead of a single long fic. The first was an accident because I'd apparently made it an anthology in my ebook library but didn't mark it as such. The other I was most of the way through because I'd had the urge to read it anyway and figured I might as well use it.
Row 1:
Title: Start of Something New
Author: Bri617
Fandom: Arrow
Character |Pair: Oliver/Felicity
Words: 111,778
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Canon Typical Violence
Summary: Actor!AU Award-winning actor and heartthrob Oliver Queen has had enough of his Hollywood life and decides to take a year off to reconnect with his roots in Starling City. What he didn’t expect was to get stuck in an elevator with his dog and his new neighbor Felicity Smoak, CEO and founder of rising tech company SmoakSolutions, or the easy-going friendship that came out of that first meeting. But is friendship really all there is between them?
Comments: An enjoyable read. I’d give a 4.5 out of 5 rating only because the slow burn dragged on just a little too long. There is some canon typical violence but there is also a home invasion scene towards the end involving Oliver and Felicity that is stopped before anything actually happens. It could be triggering for some though.
Title: Two Weeks Notice
Author: Maleshka
Fandom: NCIS
Character |Pair: Tony DiNozzo, Jethro Gibbs, NCIS Team
Words: 106,394
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: Canon Typical Violence
Summary: Tony has finally reached boiling point and hands in his resignation. Gibbs has two weeks to change his mind.
Comments: I’m kind of meh about this story. I’ve read it before and I had enjoyed it but I’ve become less and less of a McGee and Ziva fan over time. It takes place prior to Dead Air so it doesn’t have that can of worms to deal with, but while I could buy McGee’s remorse over his part in things, I really found myself having a hard time believing Ziva’s. That could just be me though.
Title: Changes (WIP)
Author: Draconia
Fandom: Random Small Fandom: Transformers (Bay Movies)
Character |Pair: implied Sam/Bee, implied Will/Ironhide
Words: 91,173
Rating: Teen and Up
Warnings: None
Summary: Sam is looking forward to the holidays, he's run down from trying to keep on step ahead of failing college, Bee is threatening to turn him over to Ratchet and the way he is feeling he just might let him. Over the next few weeks they find that many things are changing for Sam and for them as well, they just don't know when it's going to stop or what is going to happen next.
Comments: This is one of those fics where the author essentially kept going “and then this happened, and then this, and then…” They may have been building towards something but it felt very Day in the Life so the fact that it’s unfinished isn’t really an issue. I did enjoy it and it would have been nice to see where it went but I’m not unhappy. Of course, now I have the urge to reread Macx’s Imperfection and Imperfection Deviation series but that’s not a rabbit hole I’m ready to fall down right now.
Row 2:
Title: The Help of a Steady Hand
Author: enigmaticblue
Fandom: Eureka
Character |Pair: Jack/Allison/Nathan
Words: 54,931
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: None
Summary: When Fargo manages to bring Nathan Stark back from the dead, it sparks a series of events that will change Eureka forever.
Comments: Jack/Nathan is still my preferred pairing in this fandom but I do enjoy a good OT3 in it too. And enigmaticblue does a fairly good job of looking at all of their perspectives as they navigate the beginnings of a relationship together. The Jo/Zane/Zoe triangle was an interesting side story without taking away from the main relationship.
Title: Tangled Destinies series
Author: Keira Marcos
Fandom: Star Trek: Alternate Original Series
Character |Pair: Kirk/Spock
Words: 152,786
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Canon Typical Violence, mentions of past child abuse, attempted assault.
Summary: Spock convinces his father to move to Earth after refusing to bond with T’Pring. The consequences of this change the dynamics of his family and sets him on the path that will lead him directly to James Kirk.
Comments: Still one of my favorite Canon AU’s for STAOS.
Title: Just The Beginning
Author: Silversun
Fandom: Chronicles of Riddick
Character |Pair: Riddick/Vaako
Words: 46,760
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: None
Summary: A prophecy, the planet Furya and the future of two races.
Comments: I enjoyed the story but I did feel, especially towards the end, that the author could have focused just a bit more on the actual plot and skipped some of the ridiculous amount of sex.
Row 3:
Title: The Viking Hunter series
Author: Jameschick
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Character |Pair: Xander/Spike, mild Xander/OMC
Words: 50,824
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Canon Typical Violence
Summary: Xander is turned by an ancient and powerful vampire Master.
Comments: It’s been ages since I’ve read this, hence not remembering it was a series instead of a single story. Plus there’s been another story added on the SpanderFiles site that I have not read yet. Overall it was still the fun read that I remember it being. The amount of onscreen sex compared to the length of the stories was slightly ridiculous but I remember that being somewhat par for the course in fandom around the time this was written.
Title: Child of the Earth and Sky
Author: LittleBigSpoon
Fandom: The Hobbit
Character |Pair: Bilbo/Thorin
Words: 143,610
Rating: Teen and Up
Warnings: Canon Typical Violence
Summary: Certain events in Bilbo’s life were always destined to come to pass, but the will of Belladonna Took is not to be trifled with, and her choice may yet change the lives of many. This is the story of how Bilbo became the kin of the Eagles of Manwë, and all that happened after.
Comments: Still one of my absolute favorites.
Title: Reading of the Will
Author: RebeccaT
Fandom: Magnificent 7 (TV)
Character |Pair: The Seven, no pairing
Words: 40,831
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: None
Summary: The reading of the Will of Lincoln Larabee brings together all of his seven sons for the first time.
Comments: I really enjoy the concept of this story. I actually have a file folder on some hard drive somewhere with notes for my own series of stories, written back when the story was first posted.. Unfortunately for this story it ends somewhat abruptly because the author clearly had plans for more that never got them written or at least posted somewhere.
