The next morning Buck walked into the office whistling cheerfully. He placed the box of pastries he was carrying on the break room table, taking a bear claw for himself before getting a cup of coffee. A quick sniff told him someone other than Vin had made it so he was good to go with only a little milk. Back in the bullpen he knew everyones eyes were on him but he ignored them settling down at his desk. Shuffling some papers around, Buck began mentally counting.

One.

Two.

Three.

"So how'd it go last night?"

"How'd what go, Junior?" Buck asked innocently looking over at the sharpshooter. Vin rolled his eyes.

"Why is when we don't won't details on your latest paramour we cannot get you to cease yet when we are actually interested in a subject you go quiet?"

"Why, Ez, are you asking about my last date?"

"How'd the phone call to the kid go last night, Buck?" Chris asked coming out of his office. He looked up from the folder he was reading at the silence. "What?"

"Nothing, Chris," Buck chuckled. "It went good. We talked for almost an hour before he had to go. Plans to meet up with friends. We talked about work a little bit. He didn't say too much about his parents but from what little he did say his mom tried but the sperm donor, as he called him, was a real bastard. Usually drunk. He's a bit of a sci-fi geek but not nearly obsessed as some of them can be.Overall Xander seems like a good kid. He had a crappy childhood but he hasn't let it keep him down. I invited him out to visit. He said he'd be able to take some time in about a month when the current project at work finishes. We've already set up a time to talk Thursday night since I've got a date with Angela tomorrow. Got his email too. Get this, his email is White Knight. Hell, if he didn't enjoy working construction so much I'd try and get him to join the academy."

"Whoa, hold up, Buck," Chris interrupted. "Don't you think you're moving a just a little fast. You've had one letter and one phone conversation with him."

"I know, Chris," Buck huffed, "but this...feels right. He's a good kid. I can tell. And he's family. Like you guys. Besides it's not like he's flying out here tomorrow or something. I've got a month to get to know him better. Everything'll be fine."

"I trust you. I just don't want you getting your hopes up only to find out he's not what you think he is."

"He's a good kid. You'll see."

"Alright. Okay, meeting room, everyone. Time to get some work done."
